On March 07, 2025, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) officially published version 3.0 of the Basic Standard for Electrostatic Discharge Immunity Testing, IEC 61000-4-2:2025 ed3.0, which replaces IEC 61000-4-2:2008 ed2.0, published in 2008, with a stabilization date of 2027, and is expected to become available by the end of this year.
Version 3.0 includes the following major technical changes from the previous version:
1. Added requirements for calibration of air discharge tips for ESD generators;
2. Added an informative appendix on test setup specifications for specific types of equipment (Appendix I);
3. added an informative appendix on wearable devices (Appendix J);
4. added an informative appendix on how to select test points and provided guidance on how to specify the number of direct contact discharge pulses (Appendix E).
5. Moved former clause 9 to a new informative appendix (Appendix K);
6. Improved the current current calibration procedure;
7. Updated the measurement uncertainty considerations and also included examples of uncertainty assessment;
8. Moved the post-installation test method to a new informative appendix (Appendix G) since it cannot be performed in a controlled environment.
